Should You Be Using an Antibacterial Deodorant?

Should You Be Using an Antibacterial Deodorant? - Salt of the Earth Natural Deodorants

If you have spent the last few months with a bottle of hand sanitiser in your bag (and car, desk drawer, bathroom cupboard and bedside cabinet!), you’ll be pleased to learn that hand gel isn’t the only toiletries product that’s been protecting your body from bacteria. Salt of the Earth Natural Deodorants also contain antibacterial ingredients which help to fight the odour-causing bacteria that thrive in your underarms.

Is Every Deodorant Antibacterial?

‘Deodorant’ is often used interchangeably with ‘antiperspirant’, but deodorants and antiperspirants are not the same thing. An ‘antiperspirant’ typically prevents your body from sweating by plugging the pores in your underarms with synthetic particles (such as Aluminium Chlorohydrate). A ‘deodorant’ contains antibacterial ingredients which prevent the friendly bacteria which live on the surface of your skin from reacting with perspiration, causing that ‘sweaty’ smell.

So no, not every deodorant is antibacterial! By preventing the natural perspiration process at its source, traditional antiperspirants also inhibit the natural detoxification of BPAs, heavy metals, and other toxins, whereas deodorants such as our Salt of the Earth range prevent body odour with natural antibacterial ingredients.

Antibacterial Ingredients in Deodorant

At Salt of the Earth, some of our favourite ingredients contain powerful natural properties to help you to stay fresh and smelling great. Here’s some of our favourites:

Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice)

With a rich history in ancient medicine and a timeline which can be traced back to 2,200 BC, the gel from inside the leaves of the Aloe Vera plant is widely celebrated for its healing properties. Commonly used to treat burns and other injuries, this wonder ingredient is packed with powerful antibacterial, antiviral and soothing antiseptic properties, which is why we love to use it in our range of natural deodorants!

Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate)

Used as a household remedy for removing odours, spills and stains for generations, baking soda is a powerful natural ingredient with impressive antibacterial properties to help fight body odour. Sodium bicarbonate also absorbs moisture, making it the perfect ingredient for a natural deodorant!

Honeysuckle Flower Extract (Lonicera Caprifolium)

Honeysuckle was used in ancient Chinese medicine as a healing tea to ease muscle pain, fever symptoms and as a natural detoxifier. This ingredient is believed to host antiviral and antibacterial properties, as well as anti-inflammatory and antiseptic benefits. We love using this natural powerhouse ingredient in our natural deodorants to help protect you against body odour.
