Do fragranced deodorants irritate sensitive skin?

Do fragranced deodorants irritate sensitive skin?

It's quite common to get underarm irritation from your deodorant or antiperspirant, but it’s not necessarily the fragrance your skin may object to. Traditional antiperspirants and deodorants often contain a number of harsh chemicals, including aluminium chlorohydrate, parabens, triclosan and alcohol, and work by blocking your pores to restrict your body’s natural perspiration.

If you already have sensitive skin, these chemicals may exacerbate the problem, which is why more and more people are turning to natural deodorants, which are aluminium chlorohydrate and paraben free. Natural deodorants work with the body, allowing perspiration, but neutralising body odour. They don’t contain synthetic chemicals, so are far kinder on your skin.  If you prefer a scented deodorant, many are fragranced with natural oils and extracts.

The natural deodorant market has grown considerably over the last few years, now offering customers far greater choice in terms of application method.  Crystal sticks, roll-ons and sprays are quite readily available and can be purchased through major retailers, as well as independent health stores and pharmacies.

Most importantly, always make sure you check the ingredients on the label and do a patch test before applying on your underarms - the more synthetic chemicals you can avoid, the gentler it will be on your skin.
